Frequently asked questions regarding Meshtastic.

From Meshtastic.org’s documentation:

“Meshtastic® is a project that enables you to use inexpensive LoRa radios as a long range off-grid communication platform in areas without existing or reliable communications infrastructure. This project is 100% community driven and open source!”

Think about congestion and air time, privacy, security, and etiquette. For example, people have to opt-in for map reporting. So if there are known repeater locations, it is not right to re-publish their position locations as map reports without the consent of the owner. Nothing is stopping a person from doing that, but they should always ask and respect the owners decisions. It’s shared, so as long as you’re being excellent to others, you’re good.

Getting started with Meshtastic is straightforward:

  1. Get compatible hardware - Purchase a LoRa-capable device such as a T-Beam, LilyGO T-Echo, or RAK WisBlock.
  2. Flash the firmware - Use the web flasher at meshtastic.org/docs/software/android/flasher or the mobile app.
  3. Configure your radio - Set your region, frequency, and channel settings to match your local mesh network (for Florida Mesh, see our regional settings).
  4. Install the app - Download the Meshtastic app for Android or iOS, or use the web client.
  5. Connect and test - Pair your device via Bluetooth and send a test message to verify it’s working.
  6. Join the community - Connect with other operators in your area for tips and support.

Remember to follow local regulations and community guidelines when operating your node.

  • Verify internet connectivity on the device
  • If its a NRF52 based node confirm that Proxy to Client is enabled.
  • Check that your MQTT credentials are entered correctly
  • Ensure the precision settings meet the minimum requirements (1194ft / 363m)
  • Confirm the root topic is set exactly to msh/US/FL
  • Verify the MQTT module is enabled and properly configured

Notification behaviour is local to your phone. Messages keep arriving either way, and your node keeps relaying traffic for the mesh.

  • Mute the conversation. Select the channel in the message list, then Mute notifications: 8 hours, 1 week, or always.
  • Disable notifications for the app in your phone’s settings.
  • Remove the channel in the app’s channel settings, freeing the slot. Rejoin later with the name and key above.

No. msh/US/FL is the only root topic the server accepts. Publishes to any other topic are rejected.

You can publish to your own subgroup beneath it, such as msh/US/FL/mygroup. You cannot subscribe to a parent of msh/US/FL, such as msh/US or msh.
